Outlook 2007 search busted? Here’s the fix

Halloween Porch

Outlook without search is totally useless to me. I’ve run into a problem where Outlook reports “Search results may be incomplete because items are still being indexed”. It then gives you some idea about how much work is left to do. The problem is that the work remaining never gets done; the indexer is wedged.

Thanks to Serdar Yegulalp for publishing this excellent set of instructions for un-wedging Outlook 2007 search. Outlook is happily re-building its index as I type this.

  1. Here is another solution: Gmail.
Note: while I admit I am a convert to Gmail, and therefore biased, the big feature for me is in fact search (I also like the tagging). The big downside is off-line access, but Gmail does support POP and rumour has it that they might add IMAP support. Of course, once off-line you are back to Outlook or Thunderbird or (pick your client)…

  2. I use Gmail all the time for mail that gets routed to my iunknown.com address. However, for managing the 10X greater volume of mail that I have at work, Outlook is quite a nice solution (especially now that I’ve added the 3 essential macros that I need to fit my workflow).

  3. Ever tried to use a search tool? Most search tools index the mails in Outlook automatically and very fast. I recommend lookeen, because for me it works best.

  4. I agree, lookeen is a very good solution to the ongoing problem of a crappy Outlook search, even a fixed Outlook search is not as good as lookeen ;)
