RubyCLR at Tech Ed

I just finished teaching a class this week, and I’m getting ready for another Tech Ed. I’ll be co-presenting a session at Tech Ed this year with Mahesh Prakriya of the CLR team. Mahesh will be presenting IronPython, and I’ll be presenting RubyCLR.

A big thanks goes out to Mahesh for volunteering to share his talk with me at the last minute. This is why the talk abstract doesn’t refer to RubyCLR at all, which is unfortunate. But please feel free to spread the word!

I’ll also be co-hosting a BOF with Scott Hanselman as well. It’s always fun to do these with Scott – I think this will be the third time that we’ve done one of these together at Tech Ed.

Oh yes, I’ll definitely ship the 4th drop of RubyCLR this weekend – likely Sunday sometime from Tech Ed.

I’d love to get together with folks who are using RubyCLR or are thinking about using RubyCLR at Tech Ed. Send an email to jlam at this domain if you’d like to find a time / place to meet, or just show up at the session or the BOF.

DEV210 CLR: IronPython and .NET Scripting Languages

Day/Time: Monday, June 12 5:00 PM – 6:15 PM Room: 257 AB

Speaker(s): John Lam, Mahesh Prakriya

“IronPython” is the codename for a new implementation of the Python programming language on the .NET Framework. IronPython is fast-up to 1.8x faster than Python-2.4 on the standard pystone benchmark. It supports an interactive interpreter with fully dynamic compilation as well as static compilation to produce pre-compiled executables. It’s well integrated with the rest of the framework and makes all .NET libraries easily available to Python programmers. This session shows how IronPython brings the power of .NET to Python and the power of Python to .NET. At OSCON 2004, the first public release of IronPython was announced. This session demonstrates the latest IronPython version in a range of situations from using GUI frameworks to driving Microsoft Office applications to working with a variety of external libraries. We also discuss other scripting languages on .NET.

BOF11 Ruby and .NET

Day/Time: Tuesday, June 13 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Join John Lam and Scott Hanselman as we entertain the question “Why Ruby?” with you. Ruby is the dynamically typed language that has all the buzz this year, mostly due to the phenomenal success of the Rails web application framework. Can Ruby replicate Rails’ success on the .NET platform? We’ll show you what’s possible using John’s RubyCLR bridge, and we hope that you can show us what you’ve been doing with Ruby and .NET.
Session Type(s): Birds of a Feather
